Illegal firework ignites small fire

Firefighters quickly extinguished a small blaze ignited by an illegal firework at the intersection of Siskiyou Boulevard and Mistletoe Road early Monday.

Ashland Fire & Rescue responded to a report of a grass fire at the intersection, near Blackstone Audiobooks, at 1 a.m., said Margueritte Hickman, division chief and fire marshal.

Within minutes, firefighters had the 10-by-30-foot fire under control, she said.

Hickman said the type of firework that caused the blaze is illegal throughout the state, because of its large size. The firework created a loud noise that was heard by people in the area, she said.

No one was cited for the fire and investigators have no suspects, Hickman said.

The fact that there were no fires on the Fourth of July, and only one the next day, shows that people followed the city's ban enacted last fall on all but novelty fireworks, she said.

"To me, the big news about the Fourth of July this year is that we had a lower incidence of the number of fires and we truly appreciate our citizens being willing to follow that new ordinance, whether they agree with it or not," Hickman said.

Firefighters responded to two fires in the city on the Fourth of July in 2009.
