Jupiter's Beard at Caldera

Colin Riversong has big plans for his Ashland-based band in 2014. "We're going to get out there more, show the town what we've got, and record a demo," the guitarist says, adding that one day he'd like to be able to play music full time.

Barely a year old, Jupiter's Beard already has compiled a large catalog of original, often danceable, rock-fusion music and landed gigs at Club 66, Caldera Tap House, Oberon's Tavern, Taroko and other local venues.

"What we mean by rock-fusion is that it has rock 'n' roll roots, but the fusion part of it is elements of pop, hip-hop and jazz," Riversong says.

The band, made up of Riversong's twin brother Ian on drums, his longtime friend Kwessi Williams on bass, and his new friend Dave Kelley on guitar, will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Caldera Tap House, 31 Water St., Ashland. Cover is $3. Call 541-482-7468.

The name "Jupiter's Beard" was the product of months of deliberation by the band members.

"Names are hard to figure out, and we'd been debating for several months on what our name would be," Riversong says. "Then one day, Dave and Kwessi were walking in North Mountain Park and saw a shrub with pink flowers called Jupiter's Beard. They started joking about the name, which eventually became a reality."

Fortunately, the members were more decisive about the music they wanted to play.

"The main thing we all have in common is a great appreciation for music in all its forms," Riversong says.

When it comes to writing lyrics, Riversong, who also is the kitchen manager at Wiley's World Pasta Shoppe, practices the tried-and-true rule, "Write what you know."

"One of the songs, I recently wrote, 'The Green,' is about not wanting to chop parsley anymore," he says. "The chorus line goes, 'Some day I'll stop staring at the green, and I won't chop no more (expletive) parsley. I'll say my fond farewells, and then I'll leave. Kitchen, you'll never get the best of me.' "

The band also works some cover songs into its sets, including new arrangements of "Thriller" and "Beat It" by Michael Jackson, "No Excuses" by Alice in Chains, "Rockin' in the Free World" by Neil Young and "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd.
