Kendall named Southern Sky pitcher of the year

Ashland High senior Ian Kendall was named the Southern Sky Conference pitcher of the year and was one of nine Grizzlies to earn all-league recognition, as the all-star list, voted on by the coaches, was released Thursday.

Kendall, who will likely pitch for the Grizzlies in today's Class 5A state championship game, led the Grizzlies' pitching staff during the SSC season with a 0.00 ERA, 53 strikeouts and a 6-0 record.

Ashland, which ran the table (16-0) to grab its third straight league title, had eight players voted to the SSC first team and another earn second-team honors. Kendall took up two spots on the first-team roster, making it as both a pitcher and an outfielder.

Ashland's other first-team all-SSC selections were: senior outfielder Luke Baldrica; senior shortstop Nick Hall; sophomore first baseman Billy Hansen; junior third baseman Brent Hegdahl; junior catcher Jake Scarminach; sophomore second baseman Ethan Schlecht; and senior pitcher Lucas Stone.
