Kiwanis Club gives teen moms a helping hand

The Kiwanis Club of Ashland helped make the holidays a little brighter for 10 Medford-area teen moms and their families on Thursday.

Kiwanis provided Thanksgiving dinner supplies, as well as everyday groceries and diapers, for 10 households that included 10 teen moms and their children. The club spent $1,200 on the shopping spree.

In cooperation with Youth for Christ, Peggy Trowbridge, Kiwanis member and director of the Youth for Christ Teen Mom Mentoring program, arranged this day and evening for the teen moms. The volunteer mentoring program is designed to give teen moms and their children a safe place to come, relax and have fun once a week.

A hot meal is provided, along with a craft or other activity and childcare for the evening. The mentoring program strives to provide each mom with a stable and reliable mentor who is available to spend time with the girls, listen, pray, laugh and cry with them as the situation warrants.

Thirteen Kiwanis members volunteered for this event, joined by four Ashland High School Key Club members. Kiwanis and Key club members were assigned a teen mom for shopping purposes.

Groceries were delivered that evening, and the Kiwanis members, teen moms, their children and the mentoring staff were able to share a Thanksgiving dinner together.
