Kiwanis honors students of the month for September, October

September: Cheyenne Peters

For the month of September, the Kiwanis Club of Ashland recognized Cheyenne Peters as the Student of the Month. A senior student from the Ashland High School is honored each month during the school year.

Peters has been deeply involved in leadership activities all four years at AHS. She was Freshman VP, Sophomore Class President, Junior At Large, and Senior VP. Cheyenne also participated in the OASC Leadership Camp, and the OASC Leadership Spring and Fall Conferences. Other activities have included Natural Helpers, Sparrow Club, Amnesty International, National Honors Society, Global Citizens Core, and Key Club. She was also a Fresh Start Counselor, Red Cross Blood Drive Volunteer, and participant in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Having done all this, Peters still found time for volleyball, private singing lessons and rock climbing.

Peters also found time for some work jobs, including babysitting, catering, and as an employee at two retail businesses.

During her college days, Peters plans to major in education and psychology.

October: Jesse Javna

For the month of October, the Kiwanis Club of Ashland recognized Jesse Javna as the Student of the Month. A senior student from the Ashland High School (AHS) is honored each month during the school year.

Javna carries a 4.0 GPA, and is a National Merit Finalist. He has taken many Advanced Placement classes during his school years, including U.S. History, Language and Composition, Chemistry, and Government. Jesse attended a summer session at Guanajuato University, was on the Speech and Debate team, and was a Student Tutor in Chemistry, Biology, Spanish, American Studies, and other classes.

Javna did find time for non-academic activities. This year he is the Editor in Chief for the school newspaper. Last year he was the newspaper's news/opinion editor. He has participated in the Model United Nations, Key Club, Amnesty International, Peer Jury, Mu Alpha Theta Math Club, and Global Citizens Corporation. Javna was also a Student Leadership Freshman Mentor.

For fun, Jesse plays guitar with his friends and family. His band won the high school's Battle of the Band competition two years in a row. He has also found time for Freshman and Varsity basketball, and Junior Varsity Tennis.

To support the local community, Javna has volunteered for ScienceWorks Museum, 6th grade Spring Boys Basketball coach, Food Drive, Toy Drive, Mail Carrier's Food Driver, Freshman Day, Global Aids Awareness Day, and Hunger Awareness Week. He also has worked as an Earthworks Press Intern and Rent-a-Grizz Manual Helper.

The Student of the Month receives an award certificate and a $50 savings bond. During the month of May, 2008, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with a $1,000 college scholarship. This is called the "Tommy Laird Kiwanis Scholarship".
