Kiwanis Student of the Month: Jeffrey Star

The Kiwanis Club of Ashland has recognized Jeffrey Star as its March 2009 Student of the Month. Jeffrey is the son of Sally Saifer and Peter Formosa.

In addition to the Kiwanis Student of the Month, Star has received many honors and awards throughout his AHS career. Star is a finalist for a National Merit Scholarship, and he has been nominated for the Presidential Scholarship Program.

Star has been awarded outstanding student for French, advanced algebra, theatre, geometry, acting ensemble, literature, pre-calculus, biology and chemistry.

He was also a qualifier for a state math contest, a nominee for the NCTE Writing Award, an AHAA Scholarship recipient, School Letter recipient, and qualifier for the National Acting Competition. Star has taken three advanced placement classes. He maintains a GPA of 4.0.

Star loves the theatre and the performing arts. He has been an actor throughout his school years, including lead in "Beauty and the Beast." He is currently the male lead in "Pajama Game."

He will be a director in this spring's drama. He also plays the viola, and he has been involved with the chamber orchestra and choir. He is also interested in film work and has been a film production assistant, a floor assistant at ScienceWorks, and a videographer at Mobius Productions.

During his AHS career, Jeffrey has also found time to support the community. He has been a counselor at the ScienceWorks Summer Camp, counselor at the Children's Drama Workshop, and an entertainer at community dinners.

Jeffrey has applied to many colleges and universities, hoping to follow a college career path that may include film work and perhaps graphic design.

The Student of the Month receives an award certificate and a $50 savings bond. During the month of May 2009, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with a $1,000 college scholarship. This is called the "Tommy Laird Kiwanis Scholarship."
