Krant, Charter lead AHS snowboarders to victory

Ashland High's Oliver Krant won his second boys slopestyle competition for the second time in as many weeks and fellow Grizzly Marlia Charter won the girls event as Ashland rolled at Mount Ashland on Friday.

Krant, who scored 181 points and landed two 700s (double rotations) on his second run, was one of eight Grizzlies to finish in the top 10. That included the top five placers — Krant, plus second-place Rodney McDaniels (160 points), third-place Kavi Taraka (156 points), fourth-place Ananda Goldsmith (153 points) and fifth-place Brendon Barber (152 points).

Charter scored 135 points to best teammate Alicia Jucevic by 10 points.

The Grizzlies head to Mount Shasta on Saturday to practice their halfpipe maneuvers. The OISA Southern Oregon League halfpipe competition will be held next Friday.

Girls Basketball

Ashland gave its star player the spotlight on senior night, and Allison Gida responded in unparalleled fashion in Southern Sky Conference girls basketball Friday.

The senior guard scored a career-high 38 points, eclipsing the 30-point effort she had earlier this year against South Medford, as Ashland beat Mazama, 67-35. "It was senior night, and she's been as good as there is in this valley for four years," Ashland coach Tom McCracken said. "So we showcased her and she rose to the occasion."

Gida was 16 of 21 from the field, including two 3-pointers in three attempts. She grabbed 14 rebounds, nine of which were offensive, and added six steals.

Fourth-ranked Ashland (19-5, 11-0 SSC) led 28-15 at halftime, then Gida, a University of Utah recruit, took over. She began the third quarter with a 3-pointer to start a string of nine straight points by her for the Grizzlies. She wound up with 14 in the period.

"She got a lot of putbacks," said McCracken, "and offensively, we run a lot of stuff through her. Everyone contributed, but we went to Allison and she did her thing."
