Library sleepover

Added to the books, laptops and lecture notes Southern Oregon University students schlepped to the library this week were a few extra study aids — pajamas and sleeping bags.

The SOU Hannon Library has been open 24 hours a day since Sunday night to allow students to study during "dead week," the week prior to final exams. Students are invited to sleep over and will even win prizes for best pajamas and slippers or "coziest nesting site." A few students even bring in tents, said Library Dean Paul Adalian.

Adalian, who came to the university in August from California State University Channel Islands, started the dead week events last term to give cramming students a convenient study option.

"The night supervisor said that at midnight there were a lot of people in the library who didn't want to leave," he said. "I said, 'Let's try it in the fall and see what happens.' We tried it and had a lot of people staying."

The overnight sessions are especially popular with students working on group projects, using library computers, or commuting from other cities, he said.

Coffee, tea and hot chocolate is available for study breaks, as well as clips of the television show "Friends" to fit the theme "You have a friend in the library."

Only students with id cards are permitted inside after midnight, and campus security officers are available to escort student to cars and dorms.

Students, even those who haven't spent the night just yet, said they liked having the option.

"It's really important to me that the library is open when you need it at the most critical time, and that would be quiet week and finals week," said MariAngela Williams.

Williams has been able to get her work during the day so far, but she might need a late night in the library before she graduates next June.

"It's so nice that it's there whether you need it today or tomorrow," she said.

The library will revert to more regular hours on Friday, March 13.
