Man jailed on arson charges

YREKA, Calif. — A 50-year-old Dorris, Calif., man remained jailed Monday on arson and other charges for allegedly trying to burn down the house of a friend who demanded he move out Wednesday, authorities said.

Arlef Weaver was in the Siskiyou County Jail in Yreka on $250,000 bail on charges of arson, felony vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department.

Weaver had been living recently in the house of a friend who told Weaver last week that he needed to move, deputies said.

Weaver then allegedly built a fire in the woodstove and used a gas can in an attempt to throw gasoline on the friend, who was able to dodge the spray, deputies said.

Weaver then allegedly poured gas on the woodstove, igniting the fuel as he fled, sheriff's Capt. Jim Betts said.

The owner quickly used curtains to extinguish the flames, which caused minor damage, Betts said.
