Marist starts fast, knocks out Ashland High girls

A team can do almost everything else right, but if the ball doesn't go through the hoop enough times it still won't win.

Ashland High girls basketball coach Emily Hesse said it was just one of those nights for the Grizzlies.

Ashland executed well and played hard on defense, but could not make open shots in a 67-37 Class 5A play-in loss to Marist on Wednesday at Marist High School in Eugene.

Afterward, Hesse said she was pleased with the performance, but not the result.

"Our shots weren't falling, but they played so well," said Hesse, whose team finished the season 7-16 after losing its last five games. "They played as a team and they played with heart."

The Spartans (11-14), who snapped a five-game losing streak, advance to the Class 5A state playoffs. The 16-team field will be whittled down to eight on Saturday, when Marist will face an opponent yet to be determined.

On Wednesday, Marist opened up a 30-18 halftime lead and increased its cushion to 17 heading into the fourth quarter. There, the Spartans outscored the Grizzlies 18-5 to win going away.

Ashland's struggles began early, but sophomore guard Georgia Williams did all she could to keep the Grizzlies competitive. The versatile slasher was the only Grizzly to score in the first quarter (eight points) and finished with a game-high 22 despite fouling out.

Only one other Grizzly added more than three points, as Ashland struggled to find balance. Michaela Dunn, a sophomore post, hit two 3-pointers on her way to eight points.

Williams also paced the Grizzlies with nine rebounds.

Marist had three players in double figures led by Dani Krier (12 points) and Grace Harrison (12). Morgan Silver added 10 points and Tiffany McLean seven.

"We talked about how this was a great way to end the season," Hesse said of the Grizzlies' postgame meeting. "Yes, it's a loss, but I told them the way they played aggressive and left it all on the court says a lot about who you are. This game shows that you want to be out there, be successful and work as a team."
