Mary Alene Dutton

Mary Alene Dutton, 76, of Astoria, Ore., died on Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria.

She was born on July 30, 1934, in North Bend, Ore., the daughter of Walter Allan and Nora Turman Russell. She was raised on the Coos River near Coos Bay, and attended parochial schools in the Coos Bay area. She also attended Marshfield High School and was a member of the class of 1953. In 1952, she married Robert M. Dutton. In 1958, Mary moved to Eugene, Ore., while Robert attended the University of Oregon; they returned to Coos Bay in 1962, and then to Ashland, Ore., in 1965, where she was involved in the operation of a grocery store. Mary and Robert divorced in 1968.

As a single parent in the 1960's, Mary raised her seven children in Ashland. Later she became a nurse and, through the Ashland Community Hospital, she provided home health and hospice care to patients in the Ashland area. She suffered a severe stroke in October 2007 and was forced to retire from being a caregiver. She moved to Astoria in the spring of 2009.

Mary was a devoted member of the Catholic churches in the communities in which she lived, including Sacred Heart Parish, in Eugene, St. Monica's Catholic Church, in Coos Bay, and Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, in Ashland. Her hobbies and interests included being involved in activites that were of interest to her children, and Mary acted as a Girl Scout and Brownie leader. She also performed volunteer work in community action programs in Ashland during the 1960's and early 1970's. She also loved to travel and enjoyed several trips to Europe, Scandanavia and Ireland.

Mary is survived by her sons, Brian Dutton, of Astoria, Ore., Mark Dutton, of Murphy, Ore., Paul E. Nunes, of Colorado Springs Colo.; daughters Susan Vial, of Lake Oswego, Ore., Katherine "Katy" Miller, of Portland, Ore., Janet Myers, of Winlock, Wash., Diana Griswold, of Wimer, Ore.; brother, Bill Russell, of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Brittney Kinman, Kyle

Neuenschwander, Karen Winters, Sarah Gibson, Dave and Sally Roberts, Brian Carlson, Jessica Dutton, Adrienne Dutton, Mark Dutton, Jr., Andrea Vial, Elizabeth Vial, Amanda Fels, Kari

Miller; and great-grandchildren, Madison Kinman, Anthony and Cassie Neuenschwander,

Mollie and Aaron Roberts, Alexander Carlson, Andrew Gibson and Jacob Winters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, 987 Hill View Drive, Ashland, with the Reverend Sean Weeks officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Private burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland.
