McCoy sparks Ashland's fast start in rout of Mazama

The Ashland High girls basketball team bolted to a 17-4 lead en route to a 48-31 Southern Sky Conference win over Mazama to remain unbeaten in the SSC Tuesday at Klamath Falls.

Senior guard Callie McCoy scored six points in the early run for Ashland (15-5, 7-0 SSC), forcing the Vikings to abandon their zone defense, and the Grizzlies' defense took over from there.

"It was her best offensive game of the season," Ashland coach Tom McCracken said of McCoy, who finished with 12 points.

The Grizzlies rode their aggressive defense, forcing 20 turnovers, which included eight steals by senior point guard Allison Gida. Gida led the winners with 13 points and added five rebounds and two blocks.

"We didn't shoot the ball particularly well," McCracken said. "We did early against their zone, but then we kind of relaxed the rest of the first half. I thought we continued to play hard, but the shots just didn't fall."
