Music at Paschal Winery

Back in 2001, The Smithsonian Institute designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month. The annual event pays tribute to jazz both as a historic and living American art form. There are now celebrations in all 50 states and 40 countries.

Believing that jazz month is every month, Siskiyou Institute launched its New Artist Series a few weeks ago as an outgrowth of the Rogue Jazz Exchange that met at Paschal Winery in Talent for the past five years. The New Artist Series will continue to take place on a monthly basis at Paschal Winery.

This month's guest artist will be Jessica Fichot and the Gypsy Jazz Ensemble. They will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Paschal Winery, 1122 Suncrest Road, Talent.

Fichot is a lot like her hometown of Paris: French at heart, but with a soul that's truly international. Her multi-ethnic French, Chinese and American upbringing colors the songs on her debut album, "Le Chemin" ("The Path"). On the album, Fichot takes the listener on a twisting journey out of the French chanson tradition, into the lands of gypsy jazz, Chinese and Latin American folk music, through the classic American repertoire, and off into the wilderness of her imagination.

Born in the U.S. to a French father and a Chinese mother, Fichot was raised in France in a multicultural environment. She played music in Parisian coffeehouses and concert halls before graduating from the School of Audio Engineering in Paris and Berklee College of Music in Boston. She spent some time writing children's music for educational programs. Her work includes more than 100 songs published in more than a dozen countries and later, for television.

When Fichot moved to California, she began writing the songs that would eventually form the backbone of her new album. She is now on tour, bringing the songs of "Le Chemin" to live audiences. She is backed by a quartet of clarinet and sax, upright bass, guitar and drums. Part of her tour includes a trip to the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, and upcoming performances in Canada and France .

Tickets for her concert at Paschal Winery are $12, $10 for Siskiyou Institute members and $5 for students. Seating is limited and advance reservations are suggested. Reservations can be made by e-mailing or calling 488-3869.
