New West Guitar Quartet

The Siskiyou Institute will kick off its fall season with a performance by the New West Guitar Quartet at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Pascahl Winery, 1122 Suncrest Road, Talent.

New West was founded in 2003 by music majors Brady Cohan, Matt Roberts, Perry Smith and John Storie who were in a class for individual guitarists at the Thornton School of Music, at the University of Southern California at Los Angeles. The four started arranging classic jazz standards and exploring original compositions, combining the improvisational elements of jazz with the performance standards of a chamber group. In reference to their west coast roots and their passion for new music, the group dubbed themselves New West.

New West collaborated with USC to become the first group to receive the Thornton Protégé Grant. The group has performed in major venues throughout Canada, Japan, Europe and around the United States. In 2007, the group was chosen by the Los Angeles Sister City Committee to represent Los Angeles at the LA-Berlin Volksfest in Berlin, Germany. For three weeks, the group headlined the international festival with main-stage performances.

New West recently released its second CD, "Wide Awake" on Artsong Music. With the release of its recent DVD on Mel Bay Records, New West has transitioned from a quartet to a trio. The group now features guitarists, Brady Cohan, Perry Smith and John Storie. Together they focus their music to combine the elements of jazz with rock and pop influences.

"The New West Guitar Quartet comprises four of the brightest stars among a new generation of guitarists," said noted jazz guitarist Larry Koonse, faculty member of the California Institute of Arts.
