ODOT seeks public opinion on Ashland-area I-5 exits

Two open houses will be held Thursday, May 28 to review options to improve Interstate 5 exits 14 and 19. The $32 million project is slated to begin next summer.

The open houses are:

11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Pioneer Hall, 73 Winburn Way across from
Litha Park; and 5-7 p.m. at the Best Western Windsor Inn, 2520 Ashland St.

The public is invited to examine and comment on the plans, including interchange landscaping and proposed aesthetic treatments to the bridges. An Aesthetics Advisory Committee, appointed by the city, has recommended an Art Deco theme inspired by downtown Ashland architecture for the bridge designs. Plans include:

For the exit 14 bridge (Green Springs Highway):

Widen the bridge to include a center turn lane, bike lanes and
Add signals at the off-ramps, and;
Provide landscaping and bridge aesthetics.

For the exit 19 bridge (South Valley View Rd.):

Replace the existing bridge with a wider structure;
Include a center turn lane, and;
Construct wide shoulder to accommodate bicycles.
