Ore. man charged with burning girlfriend

A man accused of setting fire to his house, trapping his girlfriend inside, faces attempted murder charges.

A grand jury has handed up an amended indictment against 38-year-old Larry Barnard of McMinnville. He's also accused of arson and assault.

Krista Wiegel is in critical condition in the burn center at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland.

Police say he had been drinking on July 2 and hadn't been taking medication for a bipolar disorder.

A friend told police she was helping the 38-year-old Wiegel collect belongings to stay elsewhere for the night, but Barnard ignited gasoline poured from a red can. The friend and Barnard escaped. Police officers rescued Wiegel.

Barnard is in custody. His bail is $1.5 million.
