Teen killed when struck on I-5

An 18-year old woman died when she was struck by two vehicles in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Kuebler Road in Salem.

The accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A 2002 Lexus sport utility vehicle was southbound near milepost 252 in the far right lane when it struck the victim in the traffic lane.

A second southbound vehicle, a pickup truck, also drove over the victim after the initial collision. The two motorists were uninjured.

The teen was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Next of kin have not been notified and no names have been released.

No library for Island City

People in this small Eastern Oregon city want no part of a Union County Library District.

The City Council voted this week against placing the formation of a library district on a municipal ballot. The city had sent questionnaires to residents asking them whether they wanted a chance to vote on the matter.

Eighty-one of the 87 people who returned questionnaires said no.

The proposed measure calls for a permanent tax rate of $.85 per $1,000 assessed property value to support a library service district.
