Panthers slip past Grizzlies in nonleague showdown

South Medford turned three key double plays to stay close then beat Ashland 3-2 on Kyle Seutter's RBI single in the eighth inning Friday in a nonconference baseball game at Harry & David Field in Medford.

Dylan Albertson started the game-winning rally with a double down the line. He was moved over to third on a fielder's choice and scored when Seutter delivered a hard shot to right field.

"We just didn't play very well and we had runners in scoring position all night," said Ashland coach Don Senestraro, whose team fell to 1-1.

Ian Kendall, Brady Thomas and Lucas Stone combined to throw a three-hitter for the Grizzlies, with Kendall getting the start. Kendall struck out six and walked four in four innings of work before Thomas took over in the fifth. Stone pitched the eighth and took the loss.

Besides coming through with the game-winning hit, Seutter also picked up the win on the mound for the Panthers (2-0), who beat another Southern Sky Conference team, Eagle Point, in their season-opener Wednesday.

The Grizzlies took a quick two-run lead in the first, when Kendall was issued a bases-loaded walk and Stone smacked an RBI triple.

Stone led the Grizzlies at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and a walk.

The Panthers cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning on Josh Havird's RBI single.

Ashland loaded the bases both in the fourth and the eighth innings, but hit into double plays both times. Another double play by South cost Ashland a chance to score with two on and one out in the third.

Senestraro said the Grizzlies hurt their own cause by failing to execute on four of five sacrifice bunt attempts.

"We don't want to make excuses," Senestraro said. "We should have played better, we should have got some bunts down. I don't think we played good fundamental baseball and we've got to comeback (today), practice and just play better.

When your pitchers only give up three hits in eight innings, you've got to win those games."

The Grizzlies host Marist on Tuesday.
