Peggyann Hutchinson

The memorial service for Peggyann Hutchinson who died in Medford on March 14, 2011, will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 19, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church, 8th and Ho1ly, in Medford. The Rev. Kathleen Waugh will officiate.

Peg was born September 29, 1928, in Swan Lake, Mont., to Ansley E. Hutchinson and Ellen Davies Hutchinson. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1951. She served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict as a journalist second class. Since graduation from college until her retirement in 1998, she served as a reporter, business editor and church news editor for the Mail Tribune. For many years, Peg wrote all of the obituaries for the newspaper. She traveled the world, visiting more than 120 countries and her narrative accounts of those visits were featured in the Mail Tribune.

Her community service was extensive. She served on the boards of Mercy Flights, the Rogue Valley Manor, and the Medford branch of AAUW. Peg was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Medford and served the church as treasurer and on many committees, locally and nationally.

Peg was a concerned giver to numerous Rogue Valley, state and national charities. Peg received numerous awards during and after her professional career, including the Emmy McKinny Oregon Press Woman award for outstanding contribution to the community; Communicator of the Year; American Bar Association Sloan award, and she was a consistent winner in news writing and editing in Oregon Press Women and National Federation of Press Women contests.

A sister, Patsyjane H. O'Malley, preceded her in death.

At Peg's request, memorial gifts should be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 85 South Holly Street, Medford, Oregon 97501 in lieu of flowers.
