Perkinson, Sandoval take Cascade Conference’s weekly awards

Southern Oregon University distance runner Jessa Perkinson and softball pitcher Gabby Sandoval were voted Cascade Collegiate Conference athletes of the week on Monday, the league office announced.
Perkinson, the senior 12-time NAIA All-American from Roseburg, ran the NAIA’s fastest 10,000-meter race since 2013 on Friday at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Her time of 34 minutes 35.33 seconds cleared the runner-up in the race — which was made up almost exclusively of NCAA Division I and II competition — by 11 seconds. It was the first time she’d run the 10K since winning a national championship in 2016.
Sandoval was honored as the CCC pitcher of the week for a Southern Oregon squad that was recognized as the CCC team of the week after taking three of four games against No. 7-ranked Corban in walk-off fashion. Sandoval, a sophomore picked up decisions in each of the wins to improve to 15-3, giving her the fourth-most wins in the NAIA. The highlight was a three-hit, 71-pitch shutout on Saturday to out-duel Sabrina Boyd, the reigning CCC pitcher of the year, in a 1-0 decision.
In total, Sandoval worked 18 innings with eight strikeouts and three walks.
The 14th-ranked Raider softball (29-9 overall, 12-3 CCC), which moved into a first-place tie in the standings, is scheduled to play doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Northwest Christian.
SOU’s track and field team will have representation Friday at the Chico Twilight and Saturday at Linfield’s Jenn Boyman Memorial Invite.
