Pilots bounced into losers bracket

Despite a two-hitter through eight innings for Ashland ace Ian Kendall, the Pilots were unable to maintain their slim lead and fell to the Vauxhalla Spurs of Alberta, Canada, 5-2, in the second round of the American Legion A regional tournament Thursday at Anacortes, Wash.

The Pilots, who fell to 1-1 at the eight-team, double-elimination tournament, will try to stay alive with a victory over Wheatland, Wyo., today at 12:30 p.m.

Ashland held a 2-1 lead heading into the eighth, but allowed four runs over the final two frames.

Vauxhalla shortstop Brock Leavins and first baseman Clay Turcato each had singles in the eighth-inning rally, and third baseman Mike Brown added a double to help the Spurs surge ahead.

For Ashland, shortstop and leadoff batter Nick Hall was 3-for-5.

The winner of the Ashland-Wheatland game will play either Vauxhall or Box Elder, Utah at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
