Pilots land date in the state semis

Another big day at the plate propelled the Ashland Pilots into the final day of the American Legion A state baseball tournament Monday at North Bend.

The Pilots (32-9), who had 17 hits in Sunday's win over Jake's Crawfish, belted 16 this time in a 12-1 blowout of Area 4 South rival North Medford.

The victory, which was scheduled to go nine innings but ended after seven by the 10-run mercy rule, earned Ashland a semifinal date with Roseburg Pepsi (25-11) today at noon; the winner of that game advances to the finals against North Medford. The championship game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Ashland starting pitcher Ian Kendall (3-0) pitched 5 2-3 innings against North Medford (39-15), shutting out the Mavericks on two hits while striking out eight and walking three.

"Ian's pitching was fabulous," Ashland head coach Royce Miller said. "He pitched as well as we've seen him pitch all year, which is what we needed today."

The Mavericks, who clinched a spot in the finals on Sunday, countered by throwing Chris Bradshaw, who surrendered nine runs on 12 hits. His struggles against Ashland's batting lineup did not surprise Miller, who said that the Mavericks were resting their aces for the finals.

"We kind of anticipated that they were not going to be throwing their one, two or three at us," he said.

For the second day in a row Garrett Tygerson blasted a home run in the first inning to give the defending state champion Pilots the early momentum. This time, Tygerson's two-run shot to center field helped Ashland take a 3-0 lead into the fifth. There, the Pilots broke the game open by scoring six runs on five hits, including a two-run double off the wall by Brent Hegdahl and another two-run double by Hayden Miller.

Five Pilots came through with at least two hits against North: Nick Hall was 3-for-5 with two RBIs; Tygerson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored; Jake Scarminach was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored; Max Gordon was 2-for-4 and scored two runs and Brady Thomas was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
