Pilots sweep, stay in title hunt

Ian Kendall blasted a pair of home runs in the opener and Ashland had three pitchers combine for a three-hitter in Game 2 as the Pilots pocketed a key Area 4 sweep, 8-5 and 8-0 over the Grants Pass Miners on Tuesday at North Mountain Park.

The two wins allowed Ashland (27-7, 25-5 Area 4) to separate itself from Grants Pass (20-10 Area 4) in the league standings. The Pilots trail only the North Medford Mavericks heading into Thursday's regular season-ending doubleheader between the top two squads.

"It's great &

it comes down to the last game of the regular season and first place is up for grabs," Ashland head coach Royce Miller said. "

Kendall hit a solo homer in the first inning and added a three-run shot in the fourth to lead Ashland in Game 1. He finished 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs, while Hayden Miller was 2-for-4 and pitcher Garrett Tygerson struck out nine and allowed four hits &

and no earned runs &

in five innings.

"That was a doubleheader that we were very concerned with because we felt like the Miners were the best team that we had played all year, along with North Medford," Royce Miller said.

Brady Thomas, Luke Stone and Hayden Miller combined on a three-hit shutout in Game 2, pitching to only three batters over the minimum 21 in seven innings, with no walks.

Miller was 2-for-3 with three runs, Tygerson 2-for-2 with two doubles and one RBI and Josh McLaughlin 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Hayden Miller added a triple.

Dylan Armanino was 3-for-4 and Mike Suthann 2-for-4 for Grants Pass in the opener.

Ashland needs to sweep North Medford in order to claim the Area 4 championship, which would clinch a spot in the upcoming state tournament. A second-place finish would force the Pilots to host a state play-in game Sunday.
