Pilots swept by Mavericks in Area 4 doubleheader

MEDFORD — The Ashland Pilots American Legion A baseball team ran into a pair of stingy North Medford aces on Monday at North Medford High School.

The Mavericks' Brett Pearson followed up Colton Westfall's three-hit shutout with a one-hitter as North Medford swept in an Area 4 doubleheader.

The Mavericks (29-9-1, 8-2 Area 4) won the contests 4-0 and 12-0. Game 2 lasted just five innings by virtue of the 10-run mercy rule. The Pilots dropped to 1-20 on the season.

Pearson improved to 6-0 on the mound and would have had a perfect game if not for the Pilots' Jesse Carroll breaking it up with a single in the third inning.

Pearson was also backed by nine first-inning runs. The Mavericks' Aaron Scott and Josh Berman both hit two-run doubles in the frame and both finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Berman had a pair of doubles.

In the opener, Westfall fanned 12 in seven innings of work.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, after Pearson scored on an Ashland error and Berman advanced to third on a wild pitch, Berman stole home plate by sliding between Pilots catcher Vince Cammarota's legs to put the Mavericks up 4-0.

Pearson and Berman both finished 2-for-3. Pearson scored twice and Berman drove in a run.
