Point Loma holds off Southern Oregon

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — A three-goal barrage over six minutes in the first half was too much for Southern Oregon to overcome as the Raiders fell to Point Loma Nazarene 3-2 Wednesday.

With the loss, SOU falls to 1-1 on the season. Point Loma improves to 3-0.

The match remained scoreless until the 32nd minute, when Point Loma's Jessica Van Loo headed a pass to Carly Rivera in front of the goal off Katie Pedlowe's corner kick to make it 1-0. The Sea Lions scored again less than two minutes later, when Rivera knocked in her second goal of the game off passes from Claire Matthews and Krista Gregory.

Point Loma's final goal, and the eventual game-winner, came in the 38th minute, when Gregory's solo shot from 30-yards out reached the net to give the Sea Lions a 3-0 lead.

The Raiders came back with a pair of goals in the second half and had a couple chances in the closing minutes, but PLN goalkeeper Tiffany Kracy saved Stephanie Carr's shot in the 89th minute, and SOU was unable to capitalize on Sara Dutra's ensuing corner kick.

Carr put the Raiders on the board in the 56th minute, taking a cross from Alexis Mahoney in front of the box and knocking it in for her first goal of the season. Southern Oregon pulled within one with less than nine minutes to go when Julie Zamzow passed to Denise Powell directly in front of the goal to make it a 3-2 match.

The Raiders outshot Point Loma by one in the contest, 13-12, and also held a one-shot advantage in shots on goal, 7-6. Carr's six total shots and three on goal led the Raiders, and SOU goalkeeper Jessica Kuehlwein finished with three saves.

Southern Oregon continues its California trip this weekend when it visits Fullerton to face Hope International on Saturday at noon.
