Raiders head to Havre looking for repeat

The Southern Oregon wrestling team is off to Havre, Montana for Saturday's NAIA West Qualifying Tournament.

The Raiders, ranked sixth in the latest NAIA Top 20 poll, will compete with Menlo, Great Falls, Embry-Riddle, California Baptist, Simon Fraser and host Montana State-Northern in the one-day tournament.

Southern Oregon will be looking to repeat on last year's team championship at the qualifying tournament. The team title went along with four individual titles.

This year's tournament again looks like one of the toughest in the NAIA. Great Falls (second), SOU, (sixth), Cal Baptist (seventh), Simon Fraser (11th), Montana State-Northern (16th) and Embry-Riddle (18th) are all ranked in the Top 20 poll.

Individually, 32 wrestlers from the West Region are ranked, including top-ranked Mitchell Lofstedt (125) of Southern Oregon, Enock Franois (174) of Cal Baptist, Michael French (184) of Great Falls and Arjon Bhullar (Hwt) of Simon Fraser.

Lofstedt has put up some of best numbers in the Nation during his sophomore campaign. Along with his No. 1 ranking, Lofstedt has ran off a 35-6 record and a school-record 21 falls.

Cal Baptist's Chauncey Phillips (ranked sixth), Jason Moorhouse of Menlo (eighth), Akmal Adilov of Great Falls (11th) and Samuel Fragoza of Cal Baptist (12th) will give Lofstedt competition.

SOU's Brian Jacob is the other Raiders at 30 wins this year, coming away with a 30-11 record and 10 pins at 133. Jacob is ranked sixth in the latest rankings.

Other ranked Raiders include Kyle Wirkuty (fifth at 141), Barry Johnson (seventh at 141), Tommie Hooper (seventh at 157), Austin Vanderford (eighth at 174), Chris Platt (seventh at 184), Ron Lee (10th at 197) and John Bates (eighth at Heavyweight).

The NAIA National Championships will be held March 4-6 at Oklahoma City, Okla.
