Raiders make it eight in a row

The Southern Oregon women's softball team pounded out 27 hits as it swept Eastern Oregon 14-5 and 7-2 Friday in La Grande.

The Raiders have won eight straight and 11 of their last 12. Southern Oregon improved to 13-10 overall and 9-1 in Cascade Conference play; Eastern Oregon dropped to 6-18 overall and 2-18 in league play.

SOU travels to the College of Idaho for a key conference doubleheader Saturday. The first-place Raiders lead the Coyotes by two games in the standings.

Sophomore Meghan Laughlin led the offensive onslaught by the Raiders.

Laughlin, last week's Cascade Conference Player of the Week after hitting .667, went 4-for-5 in the opener with three runs scored and three RBIs, then went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs in the nightcap.

Freshman pitcher Jordyn Kurtz picked up the victory for the Raiders in both games. Kurtz struck out eight in the first game and five in the second game.

Danielle Stratton had two hits in the second game for the Raiders — a double and a triple.

Girls Tennis

Ashland won three of four singles matches without losing a game en route to a 7-1 victory Friday at Hunter Park.

Monika Heiken, Chloe Deckwar and Moargan Carne each rolled to 6-0, 6-0 victories for the Grizzlies, who also swept the doubles matches.

AMS Track and Field

Ashland Middle School student James Whelan cleared 4-feet-6 to tie for the second-best jump by a sixth-grader in the nation April 1.

Whelan's leap is only two inches behind the top jump in the U.S. He accomplished the feat during a meet against Lincoln Savage.
