Raiders, Owls to battle for top spot in CCC standings

The Southern Oregon University volleyball team will have a chance to break through to the top of the Cascade Conference standings with a contest at Oregon Tech tonight at 7 p.m.

The Raiders (7-7 overall) swept through this past weekend to earn their third and fourth straight wins, improving their league record to 5-1, while a five-set win over Concordia helped the 17th-ranked Owls (11-2, 6-0) remain atop the standings and the only team without a loss in league in action.

Big weekends for both schools helped the teams collectively sweep Player of the Week honors as announced on Monday. For the Raiders, junior Lindsey Stone's 78 assists earned her Setter of the Week kudos and sophomore Maggie Rivers' 32 digs made her the top libero.

Tech's Krista Wooley, a senior outside hitter, totaled 40 kills in 78 attempts, 21 digs and three service aces to become the league's Player of the Week. Wooley is averaging a league-best 3.96 kills per set, which is complimented by sophomore Megan Christensen's average of 2.64.

Lizzie Law is second only to Stone with a 8.91 assist-per-set average.

"I think in order to win this conference you need four or five big hitters, and I feel like they have at least five solid ones," Raiders head coach Josh Rohlfing said. "They're a quality team, top to bottom."

Stone boasts a 9.34 assist-per-set average, while sophomore Samantha Yutzie is pacing the Raiders with 2.62 kills per set.

A 24-kill weekend brought senior middle blocker Mia Wortell within 17 kills of being the seventh Raider of all-time to reach the 1,000-kill mark. Wortell is fifth in the conference with a .309 hitting percentage and sixth with 0.88 blocks per game.

"In order to win we're going to have to play the way we've been playing and build on what we've done so far," Rohlfing said. "It will be tough over there but we'll just have to stay consistent and confident."

The Raiders will travel to Eugene for a match with Northwest Christian at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
