Rally falls short

The Puget Sound women's basketball team held off a second-half Southern Oregon rally to defeat the Raiders 93-81 Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2012 Flagship Inn Classic at Bob Riehm Arena.

Southern Oregon's first loss drops the Raiders' season record to 4-1, while Puget Sound improves to 7-1 with the win. The Raiders return to action today for a nonconference road game against Pacific Union at 5 p.m.

Melissa Sweat scored 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting to lead SOU and added a team-best six rebounds. Angelica Cahee scored 15 points, while Allison Gida finished with 14 points and Alexi Smith tallied 12.

Ashland native Kelsey McKinnis scored a game-high and personal-best 36 points to lead Puget Sound, adding eight rebounds in the win. Erin Sumbaugh finished with 15 points, while Olivia Roberts totaled 11 and Sarah Stewart tallied 10.

After a 12-12 tie score less than six minutes into the game, Puget Sound used a 27-10 run to pull ahead by 17 points late in the opening half. A 46-30 halftime score gave way to UPS' largest lead of the game three minutes into the second period, when a Katy Ainslie jumper put the Loggers up 53-35.

Gida made a layup on the other end to spark a 21-7 rally that brought SOU within four at 60-56 with nine minutes to play. The Loggers responded with a nine-point streak to stretch their lead back to double-digits, but the Raiders again rallied to within four on a layup by Sweat with five minutes remaining.

Another UPS run put the Loggers up nine with 3:14 to go, but the Raiders had one more rally in them and pulled to 81-77 in the final two minutes. From that point, the visitors made 12 of 14 free throw attempts to put the game away and earn the hard-fought victory.
