Red flag warning issued

The National Weather Service has posted a red flag warning, which goes into effect at 4 p.m. today and warns of "abundant lightning" that could start wildfires.

The warning will be in effect until noon Saturday in Siskiyou, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath and Douglas counties. It warns of scattered thunderstorms in the region today, with even more overnight.

These storms could include lots of lightning and gusty winds, which bring a high risk of starting and spreading fires. Combined with recent heat that has dried vegetation, "these conditions will create the potential for explosive fire growth," the warning says.

Late-night and overnight storms are expected to produce higher rain amounts than the first ones that might develop, the forecast says.
