Robert W. O'Harra

Robert W. O'Harra

January 13, 1927 ~ August 28, 2013

Bob O'Harra, 86, lost a year-long battle with cancer Wednesday, August 28, 2013. He was born in Homan, Wash., but grew up and lived most of his life in Ashland, Ore.

After graduating from Ashland High School in 1944, Bob was drafted into the Army Infantry. At the end of World War II, he was discharged and returned to Ashland, Ore., where, in 1947, he and Marjorie Lutz were married. They decided to remain in the town they loved.

Bob was active in Jaycees, the American Field Service Program, Southern Oregon College Foundation, Ashland Hospital Foundation, and the Lithia Park Foundation. He served as president of Rotary and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the Ashland City Council and on the District 5 School Board. A partner in Reinholdt & O'Harra Insurance, he retired in 1985.

In retirement there was time for travel. For 25 years, Bob's favorite overseas destination was Ireland, his ancestral home. He enjoyed traveling the United States in everything from a tent trailer to a motor home - exploring small towns, cities, national parks, historical sites, parkways, rivers, coastal waterways, wherever the road led - always saying as he returned to the Rogue Valley, how glad he was that this was his home.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Milo and Carrie O'Harra; and by three brothers. He is survived by his wife and his daughters, Kathy (John) Buck, and Laurie O'Harra; granddaughters, Sarah Buck Casey, Amy Buck, Emily Buck, and Jodi Vetter; three great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

Private memorial services will be at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home.

Cancer is a devastating disease and the family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Providence Hospice, and to All Care Home Support caretaker, Amanda.
