Rotary focuses on self help housing in Guanajuato

Brian Conrad and Angelica Ruppe of the Ashland Rotary Club's World Community Service Committee will make a luncheon presentation at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow in Wesley Hall of the Methodist Church on North Main Street. Featured in the presentation will be the "Mi Casa DIFerente" program in Guanajuato, Mexico, Ashland's sister city.

The program is a public-private partnership where every donation of $650 is leveraged four times to make it possible for low-income residents to build their own homes on their own land.

Members of Ashland Rotary visited Guanajuato several months ago and formed a partnership with the Guanajuato Rotary to support the Mi Casa program. Ashland Rotary will hold a gala community fundraiser, "A Taste of Guanajuato," July 5 at the Historic Ashland Armory to raise funds for the program. Gourmet Mexican food, special performances by Emy Phelps and the Ballet Folklorica and an auction will be featured.

"Every contribution made to this program instantly yields more money and changes the lives of people in our sister city," David Schieber, chair of the World Community Service Committee said.
