RVTV director resigns

Rogue Valley Community Television's Co-Director Pete Belcastro resigned earlier this week after his contract was not renewed. His last day on the job will be August 9, and his contract officially ends October 15.

"I didn't think it would end this way," Belcastro said. "I was only hoping that when I left there would be a successor, and I could go around and introduce him to people."

Belcastro has been at the station for 18 years, and said he wanted to stay for two more. He helped create RVTV at Southern Oregon University and won seven Best of the Northwest video awards over the course of his career. He also taught classes in the Department of Communication.

"The one thing I'm going to miss the most is the students," he said. "They keep you young."

John Steinle, the associate provost for curriculum and personnel at SOU, declined to speak about Belcastro's recent work performance.

"The changeover is about redefining the mission of RVTV," he said. "Basically, as

part of the retrenchment of SOU, we analyzed the requirements for this position and had to make some changes."

A search will begin later this month for a replacement director. In the future, Steinle said, there will be "greater emphasis on financial management and program procurement."

Steinle emphasized the contributions Belcastro has made during his time at the station.

"I think his leadership in developing this service has been outstanding &

it's been an amazing asset to this community," he said. "We will hope to continue to have a good relationship with him."

According to the office memo Steinle released announcing the resignation, Belcastro was "largely responsible" for the station's growth as a provider of public, education and government access cable television and cited awards he won throughout his career.

Nena Scuderi-Fox, RVTV's current administrative manager, will take over as interim director during the search for Belcastro's replacement.

"There's not going to be huge changes," Scuderi-Fox said, "but it will be different. After 18 years, with someone new coming in, you hope for the best, and we'll all work together to see that it happens."

She said she was surprised to hear about his departure.

"He's just an extremely outgoing gentleman," she said. "He's made many wonderful contracts for RVTV and pushed very hard for us to develop new business."
