ScienceWorks Museum names new director

ScienceWorks has hired Steve Runnels to fill the vacant director position.

Runnels recently moved to Ashland and previously lived in Boulder, Colo., where he worked for the National Audubon Society as development manager.

Runnels also directed the Heard Natural Science Museum and the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science.

He attended the University of Iowa and studied museum training and general science and graduated from Texas AM at Commerce with majors in zoology/botany and a minor in earth science.

ScienceWorks founder and board president Sharon Javna believes the experience Runnels brings to running a science museum will enable ScienceWorks to "take the next big step in its growth."

ScienceWorks was developed by a group of citizens who saw a crisis in public education and a lack of family educational activities in the region.

Hundreds of volunteers, foundations, businesses and individuals have participated in the success of the museum.

ScienceWorks is currently open Wednesday through Sundays.

The museum features interactive exhibits, an outdoor garden, live science shows and programs year-round.
