Semilla Nueva Fundraiser

Poetry readings, storytelling, performance art, an inspirational talk and live music, along with dinner, desserts and beverages, will be available at the second annual “New Harmony,” a fundraiser for Semilla Neuva, a nonprofit organization founded to aid Guatemalan farmers fight poverty with sustainable agriculture. The event is set for 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at the Ashland Community Center, 59 Winburn Way. Look for poetry readings by Alma Alvarez of Southern Oregon University and former Oregon Poet Laureate Lawson Inada. Dorthy Omes will read a Mexican children's story titled “Las Manchas del Sapo,” and Cathy DeForest will read Wendell Berry's “Farmer's Manifesto.” David Zaslow will speak about the importance of “world healing,” Bryan Holley will perform English, Basque and Spanish songs and the Wilson-Rubaloff Trio will perform jazz. There will be a buffet-style dinner, with a festive holiday flair. Admission is $8, free for children.
