Shannon McEwen Foster

Shannon McEwen Foster, 89, of Phoenix, Ore., passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family.

Shannon was born in Pomona, Calif., November 17, 1922, to Jasper McEwen and northwest writer, Inez Puckett McEwen. She was the great-great-niece of Union General George Thomas (the "Rock of Chickamauga") and cousin to Mark Felt, otherwise known as Deep Throat in the Watergate scandal. Shannon attended El Monte High School, where her mother taught English, and where she met her sweetheart and future husband, William Foster, who survives. The couple recently celebrated their 70th anniversary June 6, 2012.

Shannon had many careers over her long life. During World War II she worked at Douglas Aircraft. She was president of the Altar Society, an administrative assistant at Catholic Charities, ewe midwife on the Shauna Ranch in Bandon, and always chief cook and bottlewasher at home. Her interests were many and varied: metaphysics, astrology, politics, history, and always, always horses. She was a life-long learner and world traveler. Although an only child, she became the matriarch of a large, noisy clan that included three children, Craig Foster, of Portland, Ore., Mary Foster, of Ashland, Ore., and Suzanne Foster, of Medford, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was a best friend to many.

Shannon's family would like to thank Ashland Community Hospital Hospice, and encourage donations to this outstanding organization.

A memorial service will be held at Creekside Estates Clubhouse in Phoenix, Ore., August 25, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. Shannon loved pie, so it will be a pie potluck. Bring one if you are able.

Happy Trails, Mom.
