SOU men fall short at home

Ben Voogd and Kellen Spicer combined to score 35 points to lead the Northwest Christian men's basketball team to a 66-64 victory over Southern Oregon Wednesday night at McNeal Pavilion.

Northwest Christian improved to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in Cascade Conference play. Southern Oregon dropped to 8-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play. The Raiders host Corban tonight.

SOU's Jarrad Childs led all scorers with 23 points, while Ryan Staker finished with 11.

Voogd led the Beacons with 19 points before fouling out. Spicer had 16 points.

Northwest Christian hit on 6 of 10 3-pointers in the first half and led 36-28, but Southern Oregon got hot in the second half to make it a game.

A Staker layup gave SOU the lead at 48-47 and the two teams battled it out for the final 10 minutes with neither team leading by more than four points.

Justonn Smith cut the NCU lead to 66-64 with 29 seconds to play and the Raiders had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer after the two teams combined for three turnovers in a span of 20 seconds.

Childs' runner along the baseline was long, giving the Beacons the victory.

Women's Basketball

A nine-point second-half spurt was more than enough for ninth-ranked Southern Oregon to secure an 86-71 victory over Northwest Christian Wednesday at McNeal Pavilion.

The Raiders improved to 13-3 overall and 2-3 in Cascade Conference play with the victory. Northwest Christian fell to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

Jacki Speer, in foul trouble throughout the first half, led the Raiders with 20 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Ashley Baker had 13 points and nine rebounds, while Carly Wood and Emily Brookins both finished with 12 points. Krystal Smith grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Aly Bruns turned in a team-high 14 points for the Beacons.

The Raiders held the Beacons to 37 percent shooting in the first half and led 40-37 at the intermission. In the second half, the Raiders gained some breathing room thanks in part to a pair of layups by Smith.

A layup by Scheffler gave the Raiders a 70-55 lead with 8:22 to play and SOU cruised from there, shooting 52 percent in the second half.

Southern Oregon returns to action tonight when they host Corban.
