SOU's Gilmore gains honor for defense

Southern Oregon senior linebacker JT Gilmore has been named the NAIA Independent Defensive Player of the Week.

Gilmore turned in his second impressive defensive performance on Saturday, leading the Raiders with 14 tackles, three tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in a 20-13 setback to Menlo.

In just two games with the Raiders, Gilmore has come away with 26 tackles and six tackles for loss.

Menlo outscored Southern Oregon 17-0 in the fourth quarter to overcome a 13-3 third-quarter deficit and hand the Raiders the emotionally draining loss in their home opener at Raider Stadium.

Southern Oregon starting quarterback Mike McDonald broke the tibia and fibula in his left leg and was lost for the season.

Southern Oregon hosts Western Oregon Saturday at Raider Stadium. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

Carr honored

Southern Oregon sophomore soccer player Stephanie Carr has been named the Cascade Conference's Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week.

Carr earned the honor after scoring a pair of goals in SOU's 4-0 rout of Simpson Saturday afternoon in Redding, Calif.

The victory improved SOU's overall mark to 6-2-1 and the Raiders are now just one win away from equaling last year's win total.

The Raiders open Cascade Conference play Friday afternoon at home at 2 p.m. against Northwest Christian.
