Stellar play puts Allred in the U.S. Open

PORTLAND — Ashland native Jason Allred qualified for the U.S. Open Monday, tying for second place and taking one of three spots available at Columbia Edgewater Country Club.

Allred was 5 under par for 36 holes.

Kent Eger of Regina, Saskatchewan, won the qualifier with an 8-under 134. Allred, who lives in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Matthew Richardson of Woodbridge, Ontario, each shot 137.

The qualifier was one of 13 held nationwide to fill out the 156-man field at Pebble Beach on June 17.

Allred birdied four of his first six holes and was 5 under through 14 holes of Round 1. He ended the round at 2-under 69.

In the second round, he was even par on the front nine, leaving him at 2 under. Then he made an eagle-3 on the 10th hole and a birdie on No. 16 to improve his standing.

On Sunday, Allred tied for 20th in his only Canadian Tour event of the season, closing with a 67 to get to 3 under.
