Student music ensemble

The student music ensemble Estudiantina de la Universidad de Guanajuato from Guanajuato, Mexico, performed a concert Friday night at the Mountain Avenue Theatre, capping a week of events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the sister city relationship by Guanajuato and Ashland.

The group was introduced by Señora Chela Kocks, one of the people instrumental in forging the ties between Ashland and Guanajuato back in 1969. She found important similarities between the two towns that would help develop relationships between the two communities.

The Ashland High School Choir sang two songs in honor of the Estudiantina following the intermission.

"I haven't really seen any sort of group like them," said AHS sophomore Zach Miller, 15, a tenor in the AHS chamber choir. "I think it's pretty cool that they came all the way from Guanajuato."

There were about 250 to 300 attendees in the theater, according to an estimate by one of the students. The program was more than two hours long.
