Sunbirds dump Raiders in OT: SOU topples EOU

Ashley Sherr's goal with 3:40 to play in the first overtime was the difference as Fresno Pacific knocked off Southern Oregon 1-0 Friday at University Field.

Fresno Pacific improved to 1-1 overall and Southern Oregon dropped to

1-4-1 on the season. The Raiders host Simpson next Friday at 1 p.m.

The Raiders came out with a lot of energy in the first half, outshooting the Sunbirds 8-6.

That started to change in the second half and overtime.

"Right now we aren't fit enough," SOU head coach Jon Clement said. "And because of that we are not making smart decisions late games and it's killing us."

After SOU goalkeeper Jessica Kuehlwein held an attack Sunbird offense at bay in the second half, the Raiders still forced overtime with some late defense.

In the overtime period, Kuehlwein turned away a shot by FPU's Ida Rodriguez at the 7:20 mark, but four minutes later, Rodriguez found Sherr to put the match away.

Women's Volleyball

Junior Leah Bergstrom turned in a match-high 16 kills as 21st-ranked Southern Oregon scored a 24-26, 25-23 25-23, 25-20 victory over Eastern Oregon Friday in LaGrande.

The Raiders, who have won eight matches in a row, improved to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in Cascade Conference play. Eastern Oregon fell to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in conference.

Southern Oregon travels to 12th-ranked College of Idaho Saturday night.

The Coyotes own a 36-match home conference win streak.

Bergstrom's 16 kills came with only three errors, while Leanne Stennett added 10 kills with one error and Sarah Holgen finished with 10 kills.

After taking the first game, Eastern went ahead 17-14 in the second set before the Raiders stormed back. Kills by Bergstrom and Holgen tied the game at 19-all and an Eastern error made it 20-19. Another Bergstrom kill and a Eastern error helped the Raiders take the second game and tie the match.

Southern then held Eastern to a .031 attack percentage in the third game to get the upper hand, then hit a blistering .444 in the fourth game to wrap up the match.

SOU redshirt freshman setter Angela Spieker turned in a career-high 35 assists and Becky Johnstone added 18 digs.
