Two SOU students receive scholarships

Two Southern Oregon University students have been awarded $1,500 scholarships by Chapter EE, P.E.O. for the 2009-2010 academic year. The recipients are Sarah Danae Westover and Gloria Herrera.

Westover is a 2003 graduate of Ashland High School, and a senior at SOU majoring in criminal justice and political science. She is an honor roll student, and in May she was chosen as Outstanding Junior Student in the Criminology and Criminal Justice Department.

Westover expects to graduate in spring 2010 and will continue her studies at law school. Her goal is to become a public interest attorney.

Herrera is a psychology major at SOU and a McNair Scholar. She is also an honor roll student who has garnered a list of honors and awards. Herrera anticipates to receive her B.S. in June 2010.

Herrera's goal is to pursue a doctorate degree in psychology, and use her research and educational skills to motivate minority students to meet their educational challenges.

Both Herrera and Westover are the first members of their families to attend college. Herrera also raises a 4-year-old son.

P.E.O. is a philanthropic, educational organization with more than 240,000 members. It is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for women. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic record, character, seriousness of purpose and financial need.
