UPDATED 6 p.m.: Grass fire reported at Anderson Butte

(Updated 6 p.m.) Crews have brought a grass fire dubbed the Sterling Ditch fire largely under control, officials said.

The fire on Anderson Butte west of Talent and south of Jacksonville burned through about 6 acres of brush and some large trees, but is mostly surrounded by fire lines, the Oregon Department of Forestry reported. Helicopters continue to drop buckets of water on the ridge. ODF investigators have begun looking into the cause of the fire.

(3:40 p.m.) Fire crews are responding to a 2-acre grass fire on Anderson Butte west of Talent.

The fire, which was reported at 2:49 p.m., has shot a column of dark smoke into the sky.

(Updated: 3:57 p.m.) Oregon Department of Forestry and Jackson County Fire District No. 5 crews are working on the ground, while helicopters and a retardant plane have been ordered to fight the blaze from the air, ODF has reported. Officials report that a dozer, seven ODF engines, two helicopter and two air tankers have been called out.
