UPDATED: Heavy smoke forces event cancellations

With smoke smothering the Rogue Valley, several events have been canceled because of poor air quality.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival has canceled the 8 p.m. performance of "The Heart of Robin Hood" on the Elizabethan Stage, as well as the 5:30 p.m. preface to that play. The Green Show at 6:45 p.m. will be moved inside Carpenter Hall. Find details at www.osfashland.org/smoke.

The City of Medford announced that a free concert set for Bear Creek Park tonight has been rescheduled. Local band The Seaons will perform at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 instead.

All Junior Giants baseball and T-ball games scheduled for today and Thursday, Aug. 1, have been canceled. The Junior Giants teams, a free Medford Parks and Recreation Department program supported by the San Francisco Giants Community Fund, include kids ages 5 through 13. Park & Play, a Medford Parks & Recreation program that brings arts and crafts projects, games and activities to parks, has canceled today's programs at Donahue Frohnmayer Park this morning and Holmes Park this afternoon.

Parks officials said they will evaluate daily whether activities can continue and will notify media about cancellations.

The Josephine County Fairgrounds Market will be closed Thursday because of the heavy smoke.

Ashland's East Main Band has canceled a 6 p.m. Friday show at Del Rio Winery in Gold Hill. the show was part of the winery's summer concert series and may be rescheduled later, organizers said.

Troon Vineyard's anniversary barbecue set for Saturday afternoon at the vineyard, 1475 Kubli Road, Grants Pass, has been called off. The indoor tasting room will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with anniversary specials available.

The Ashland City Band has called off its Thursday performance in Lithia Park's Butler Band Shell.

The City of Ashland has closed Daniel Meyer Pool for the remainder of the day. The pool is set to reopen for a regular schedule at 7 a.m. Thursday, but staff will evaluate air quality reports hourly. They will make a decision about afternoon swimming lessons by 2 p.m. Thursday, officials said.
