Woman, 92, drives car into Safeway entrance

A 92-year-old Ashland woman crashed into the Safeway entrance on Thursday after apparently becoming confused behind the wheel, police said.

The woman, whose name was not released, was uninjured in the crash, which occurred just before noon at the 585 Siskiyou Blvd. store. Her car, some metal poles in front of the store and some watermelons stacked by the door were damaged in the crash.

"Everybody was lucky that nobody was coming in or out at the time of the accident," said Officer Phil Gray with the Ashland Police Department.

"It looks some watermelons lost their lives, but that's it," he joked.

Gray estimated the crash caused about $1,500 in damages.
