Wurzell leads AHS golfers at state meet

Michael Wurzell tied for 15th in the final standings to lead Ashland High at the Class 5A boys golf tournament Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.

Wurzell, a senior, cut six strokes off his first-round score for a final round of 75 and a combined 156, 11 strokes off the pace set by state champion Jesse Salzwedel of Wilsonville (145).

Wurzell's teammate, freshman Ben Sager, shot an 87 Tuesday for a two-day total of 179, good for a tie at 61st.

Representing the Grizz girls golf team was junior Willie Michiels, who shot a 207 to finish tied for 41st. The girls state tourney was held at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks.

SPRINGFIELD 6, ASHLAND 5 — At Springfield, Nick Hall collected two hits and scored one run for third-ranked Ashland in the non-conference game.

Brent Hegdahl's two RBI single highlighted a three-run first inning for the Grizzlies (21-5).

Ian Kendall's solo home run in the seventh pulled Ashland to within one run of fifth-ranked Springfield (17-5).

Ashland next hosts a Class 5A state playoff game Tuesday against Bend or Liberty.
