Blue — Greek on Granite

In its second year, Blue — Greek on Granite has broadened its culinary horizon to breakfast.

Ashland, says restaurant co-owner Gloria Rossi-Menedes, is a "breakfast town." And her family so loved starting their day on the restaurant's sunny patio that they knew customers would, too.

"People love to meet for breakfast," says Rossi-Menedes. "Breakfast foods are so fun."

From omelets, scrambles, pancakes, potatoes and cereals, Blue's breakfast is all-American with Greek inspiration, says Rossi-Menedes. Customers craving an authentic taste of Greece, she says, should order "galaktoboureeko," lemon custard baked in buttered phyllo, and "bougatsa," another Greek pastry with ricotta filling. There's, of course, the quintessential yogurt served with granola or plain as a side dish, as well as espressolike Greek coffee.

Coinciding with its Aug. 22 institution of breakfast, Blue gave patrons another reason to stop — for lunch. Rossi-Menedes conceived a "Greek to Go" menu of five items each priced at $6: gyro, falafel or chicken souvlaki with rice, tzatziki and pita; Greek salad with tzatziki and pita; and buttery baklava.

The lunch menu's simplicity allows kitchen staff time to prepare for dinner, says Rossi-Menedes. Although the items are for takeout only, Blue's patio is open to lunch customers, and the restaurant provides suggestions for picnic spots in nearby Lithia Park.
