Tasting Notes: Ledger David Cellars

Thanksgiving recipes typically are sentimental: your mother's famous stuffing, your sister's pumpkin pie.

When it comes to serving something with family pride, it usually requires one action: making it from scratch.

Lena Varner of Ledger David Cellars has the benefit of not only overseeing the types of grapes she grows in her family's 15-acre Talent vineyard, but she also gets to decide which of her wines she wants to serve with dishes culled from her personal recipe box.

For her Thanksgiving dinner, she planned to serve scalloped potatoes made just like her grandmother taught her — with russet potatoes, Gruyere, heavy cream and hot sauce.

An eighth-cup of Ledger David Cellars 2011 Primoris, made from the region's only locally grown chenin blanc grapes, is added to soften shallots and garlic, then blended with the milk mixture and poured over layers of sliced potatoes.

Ledger David Cellars' Le Petit Tasting Room at 245A N. Front St. in Central Point closes for the holiday but, like many other wine sellers, will feature special events this weekend. Contact your favorite tasting room about tastings, entertainment and hours.

Ledger David Cellars' Thanksgiving Weekend Open House runs from noon to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Nov. 23-25. Complimentary tastes of comfort food will be offered with purchases of glasses and bottles of wine. There will be mini red-velvet cupcakes infused with Ledger David Cellars 2010 Sangiovese — whipped up by The Cupcake Daily in Talent — along with Italian-style, baked macaroni and cheese prepared by Pomodori Ristorante in Medford.

Guitarist Jeff Kloetzel will play an eclectic mix of blues, rock and jazz from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, and acoustic guitarist Jared Goode will perform from 3 to 5 p.m Sunday.
