Tasting Notes: Winery luau

Wine grapes grow in all 50 states but you don't have to fly to Hawaii for a little aloha spirit.

Ashland's Grizzly Peak Winery will host a wine-paired luau to benefit hula school Halau Hula o Na Pua o Hawai'i Nei on Saturday, June 23, at the winery, 1600 E. Nevada St.

A lunch of barbecued huli huli chicken, pulled pork and Hawaiian-style, mayonnaise-laden macaroni salad will be available at 11 a.m. The authentic cuisine will be prepared by Oahu-raised Ed Chun of Sunrise Cafe and Catering in Medford.

Wines made from Bordeaux and Rhone varieties grown on 15 of the property's 40 acres will be sold by the glass or bottle. It costs $28 for a bottle of 2011 Tempranillo Blanco, a rare, white tempranillo with a citrus finish. The crisp, oaked 2009 chardonnay is $17, and the light-bodied 2010 merlot is $18.

Teacher Kumu Hula Pekelo Day will choreograph about 100 dancers from his "halau" (school), which offers classes in Ashland and Eugene. The group will perform movements and gestures that interpret legends and history of Hawaii. The performance stage overlooks one of Grizzly Peak's vast lawns, which has accommodated hundreds of picnickers and wine appreciators at past luaus.

Tickets for the lunch and hula show are $30, $20 for ages 17 and younger, and are available at the winery, Sunrise Cafe, CD or Not CD in Ashland or by calling 541-499-2510.

Tickets for the show alone are $20 and can be purchased the day of the event at Grizzly Peak.
