9/11: it is time for truth

With the upcoming presentation at Southern Oregon University on May 24 by , a noted theologian, researcher and author of several books on the 9/11 government conspiracy, a tidal wave of national momentum requesting truth from our government regarding 9/11 is set to wash over Ashland and the entire Rogue Valley. A glimmer of the coming emergence of truth-seekers from obsolescent obscurity to the lofty levels of political leadership was witnessed last week.

The exchange between presidential candidates Rudy Guiliani of New York and Ron Paul of Texas in a Republican debate on May 15 ought to serve as a metaphor for what's wrong with the political process in this nation. The two were addressing the attacks of 9/11 &

the elephant that has lumbered around America for nearly six years while leaders have long sought to ignore it.

The simple discourse revealed enormous complexities.

Paul: "They attack us because we've been over there. We've been bombing Iraq for 10 years. We've been in the Middle East."

An angry Guiliani responded: "As someone who lived through the attack of September 11 &

that we invited the attack because we were attacking Iraq &

I don't think I've ever heard that before, and I've heard some pretty absurd explanations for September 11th. ... I would ask the congressman to withdraw that comment and tell us that he didn't really mean that."

Paul: "If we think that we can do what we want around the world and not incite hatred, then we have a problem ... They come and they attack us because we're over there."

The audience erupted in applause and cheers for Guiliani. Paul was drowned out.

The entire scenario is a metaphor for the rampant ignorance and apathy that exists, not only at some of the highest levels of government leadership, but also consumes large swaths of the American landscape where ill-informed constituents cheer on their equally ignorant candidates with zeal.

Guiliani was wrong. Dead wrong.

The very fact that he didn't know the U.S. had been bombing Iraq every year for over a decade prior to Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 is a clear statement that says Guiliani is unfit for the Oval Office. America doesn't need or deserve a president who hasn't a clue what has occurred before his tenure that brought about the crisis situations he will inherit. Add to that the performance he gave in requesting a retraction from Paul and you've got yourself another politician better suited for Hollywood than 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Paul, on the other hand, is a brave, albeit cooked, politician. He has no chance of progressing despite the growing interest of the American people in the issues surrounding the 9/11 coverup.

And the interest in pursuing the truth regarding the events of 9/11 is gaining momentum.

Those who cover their ears, stomp their feet and scream obscenities while targeting truth-seekers with derogatory remarks and name-calling should be made aware that the playbook has changed. The old ploys that once directed loyal followers of government propaganda to ignore, ridicule, or do both when non-conformists raised their questions is now a thing of the past. The voices of dissension calling for truth have continually increased and have been joined by many with credentials that cannot be ignored.

The government's story on the events of 9/11 was simple. The United States was attacked unprovoked by unknown terrorists cells operating inside our borders but taking orders from elsewhere.

The simple question in response to this simple story is simply, was it true?

That question becomes a conundrum. After all, how can anyone prove the government is lying without a government admission? The answer is you point to all of the anomalies that raise suspicion regarding the legitimacy of the story and ask for an explanation. If the government is telling the truth, then it ought to have nothing to hide by stonewalling, use of distortion, distraction, propaganda and outright deceit. Yet, these are the routine practices of a government that claims it operates in our best interest.

The government ought to answer the people it serves. But it hasn't. And it won't.

Consider the fact that our own has joined forces with two other senators in drafting legislation to force the CIA (a secretive component of the 16 clandestine organizations operating under the executive branch) to comply with a request for its 9/11 investigative records. Also consider that the entire Senate and House have not brought to bear such an inquiry at any time in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. In other words, the people's representatives didn't ask the questions the people were asking and to this day have yet to do so with one voice. Still, they call themselves our representatives.

Consider the initial inquiry into the events of 9/11. Most folks think it was made by the 9/11 Commission. The fact is the 9/11 Commission wasn't formed until nearly two years later, due directly to the relentless pressure put on the government by four widows whose husbands died in the collapse of the twin towers. Indeed, the widows, along with many prominent credentialed experts found the 9/11 Commission hearings so disjointed, manipulated and fraudulent, it was regarded as a hoax. After it was closed following its report released on , an organization called the Public Discourse Project was created in order that the people could talk with members of the commission. That project was disbanded just over a year later after accomplishing nothing other than to placate, stall and deter serious inquiries. New investigations were demanded, but none were established. Congress ignored the people's outcry.

Consider the fact that despite the emergence of numerous scholars, military, political and religious leaders and experts in various fields, Congress has yet to establish an independent investigation looking into every question presented by the American people.

Consider that Congress established a special prosecutor to look into Clinton's perjury and obstruction of justice, yet has failed to establish just such an investigation of the numerous anomalous events that reek of deception and cover-up within this administration that have cost billions of dollars and untold numbers of lives. And in this case, if the U.S. government is complicit in any way in the events of 9/11, it would constitute an unprecedented depth of corruption and tyranny in this nation at the highest levels of leadership.

Yet, Congress has failed to honor the requests of those members that have submitted articles of impeachment, which ought to have at least triggered an independent investigation. Instead, Congress has tripped over its own nonbinding resolution of protest, folded its vetoed request to bring the troops home, and acquiesced to the president's demand to augment both troop numbers and the funds to support the war effort, which includes the construction of a near $600 million embassy (palace) on 104 acres.

Consider the notion that based upon the events of 9/11, the Bush administration ordered a ground invasion of Iraq, killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, established secret prisons, participated in authorized kidnapping, torture and murders, flouted the laws of this nation with internal spy networks, detained individuals indefinitely without cause or charge, and extended the scope of the U.S. mission in Iraq with the likelihood of a permanent post.

Consider the fact that due to 9/11, the executive branch grew enormously with the establishment of a new department called Homeland Security.

With a blank check, President Bush spends taxpayer dollars on a war that Congress seemingly has no ability to end &

or no desire to end &

despite its whispering dissent. And while the British openly prepare for a stay in Iraq through 2012, the U.S. government pretends it has no particular timeline and desires none to be established. The truth, however, is that the U.S. military is building permanent bases of operations and preparing for a permanent stay.

Such events scream for attention and straightforward answers. But who will ask the questions?

The national media long ago abandoned its post as the guardian of the public trust. Its duty was to hold government accountable to the people. Instead, ordinary citizens are leading the charge for openness in government and answers to serious questions that deserve honest answers. The problem is ordinary people have limited time and abilities ... and fail more often than not to capture the interest of gatekeepers who guard access to national audiences.

Meanwhile, the mainstream media has yet to get to the bottom of: the NORAD scandal, the World Trade Center 7 collapse, the dust clouds, the molten metal in the basement weeks later, the multiple explosions, the cut beams that were immediately carted off to Asia, the EPA assessment of the air, the missing plane that presumably disintegrated after hitting a side of the Pentagon, the connection between the security company in the towers and the White House, etc., etc.

Instead of leading the charge with these and other questions in the aftermath of 9/11, the national media was unwittingly playing a role in influencing the American people on behalf of the Pentagon's public relations department. Consider the fact that featured a headline implicating Osama bin Laden on the same day it was showcasing the 9/11 tragedy that had occurred the day before. Numerous newspapers around the country followed suit, . And within two weeks, Osama bin Laden had become the known mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks.

Consider that to this very day news articles continue to invoke the name "Al Qaida" in order to justify U.S. military actions. Most Americans had never heard of Al Qaida before the government offered it to us on a silver platter. And to this day most Americans still do not have even a basic understanding of what this organization is and how it came to be targeted by the United States. Everything linked to or done in the name of defeating Al Qaida has become automatically acceptable to the American public. Now, the government calls the insurgency in Iraq "Al Qaida in Iraq." We are told what Al Qaida says because it was taken from terrorist Web sites (which apparently our government doesn't have the ability to track down).

Meanwhile, using Web site sources is a journalistic practice used sparingly and with care. At the same time, our top levels of Pentagon leadership routinely provide us with the words and actions of its purported enemies supposedly taken from the Web site the "terrorists" use to announce what they did and what they are going to do. It would be comical if it weren't such a tragic illustration of reality. Take a look at how the Bush administration, after its insistent denial that Saddam had anything to do with 9/11, continued to link Iraq and Al Qaida in this BBC list of Bush administration quotes.

It is time for all Americans to call with one loud voice for an independent fully-funded investigation of the Bush administration's handling of 9/11, and potential involvement. Such a call is emboldened by testimonies of former national security advisors, such as Henry Kissinger and Zbigniew Brzezinski. Both testified, along with others, on to a Senate Foreign Relations Committee panel chaired by Joe Biden and Richard Lugar, neither of which has done anything to further an inquiry into the government's handling of 9/11 and the war in Iraq.

For those who scoff at the conspiratorial notion of our government causing the deaths of of its own citizens in order to galvanize support for an invasion of a Muslim nation in the Middle East, then target your ridicule toward the man who served under Jimmy Carter as his National Security Advisor. Brzezinski testified to the senate panel that a plausible scenario for the ramp-up to an attack on Iran would be failure of Iraq to meet required benchmarks that would then be blamed on Iraq, and a staged attack on either Iraqi or American soil that would be blamed on Iran.

If a man who once held one of the loftiest positions in our government structure and handled the most classified of U.S. foreign policy decision-making duties believes this government is capable of planning an executing an attack on its own people for the sole purpose of forcing the political climate to support a pre-planned war, why is such a notion given so little credence among those who know far less about our government than Brzezinski? And given the fact that our leaders lie like dirty rugs and are constantly getting caught, how safe is it to position oneself securely behind the explanations offered by President Bush for the actions and decisions of his administration pertaining to 9/11?

It is time to seek the truth. Numerous lives have been lost already based upon lies, distortions and deceit. Isn't time to try the truth? Perhaps our local leaders will help us by establishing local forums each quarter and opening the dialogue on 9/11 as a committee of committed leaders addressing the concerns of the people of the Rogue Valley. We have one congressman and two senators here. Ron Wyden has taken the lead in the Senate. I urge Gordon Smith to join him and Greg Walden to follow suit in the House.

This week Rogue Valley residents will have an opportunity to hear and discuss questions that plague the government's account of the most important event to impact this nation in our lifetimes. For our leaders, this is a crucial crossroads where political allegiances can be set aside while we all gather together to hear a presentation at SOU's Britt Ballroom that promises to provide useful information that answers many questions. In its wake it would be helpful to have community conversations about these important issues. And I call on all three of our congressional representatives to lead the dialogue with us about 9/11 and the war in Iraq on a periodic basis until these issues are resolved.
